The Business Growth Reset Journal/Clarity & Strategy/Why Change Feels Hard in Business (and How to Face It) - Part 1 of 3

Change.

Even just the word can make you tense up. In life and business, we all say we want it, but when it’s time to actually do it - in comes the excuses. The resistance. The “maybe next quarter” delay tactics.

Why do our brains fight against new beginnings? Why do we fear the next step?

Change is uncomfortable. It shines a light on all the decisions we avoided, the cracks we plastered over, and the places where we’ve quietly outgrown the way things are.

In admitting things need to change, we are holding a mirror up to all the crap things we have done, which is never easy to do. Now, I’m cool with looking at myself in the mirror from a bit of a distance, but those magnifying mirrors that show every imperfection - no thanks! I’d rather live in the comfort I don’t have to see it, even though I know it’s there! That is how we avoid change, in not confronting things.

In business, change rears its head in so many scenarios, for example:

▪️ You know a team member isn’t the right fit, you know it, they know it and the whole team knows it…but you keep putting off the hard conversation.

▪️ Your “temporary” working hours have somehow turned into your permanent reality, even though they leave no breathing room for you to do anything.

▪️ The systems you set up years ago are bursting at the seams - and redoing them feels like a mountain you don’t have the energy to climb.

I have not even scratched the surface and I bet you are already thinking “oh god that’s me”…right? I had a very recent team realisation myself. I pushed the decision to remove someone’s services for a whole 7months!
That was basically 7 months of having no return on investment.

Each month I would say to myself - I’ll deal with it next month…and the time just rolled on. I didn’t have the headspace, it felt too hard to face and to be honest, I just procrastinated myself out of dealing with it.

Guess what though? When I did finally have the conversation, the whole situation pivoted. We both realised our mistakes and where we missed out on taking accountability and responsibility. We worked it out and now things are better than ever.

I see this all the time with the women I work with. They’re brilliant, driven, ambitious and also human. Humans like safety. Routine. Familiarity. Even when that familiarity is slowly draining them. Even when doing things the same costs more than changing ever will.

In business, change rears its head in so many scenarios, for example:

▪️ What’s the real cost of not changing?
▪️ What might be possible if you faced the discomfort now, instead of dragging it out?

In Part 2, I’m going to dive into staffing changes, why they feel so personal (especially for women entrepreneurs), and how to navigate them without losing sleep or second-guessing.

Change: it’s rarely as bad as the story we build up in our heads.
